Braybrook was once a small village on the way to the gold-fields. An earlier hotel
here in the 1850's served thirsty diggers and was also court house and meeting
place.
The present bluestone hotel dates back to the 1870s and was the home of Thomas
Burge Derham, butcher, dealer and publican, his wife Matilda, and their eleven
children. The younger children attended Braybrook State School No. 1102 which
opened in 1873.
Tom Derham owned most of the land in the district, exported horses to India and
sent his customers home before they drank too much. Like many women at that time,
Mrs. Derham often ran the hotel. She was a very dignified lady. In 1927, Mrs E.
Gunn was the publican.
